What people ask before treatment
Can I book a dermatologist without a referral?
At most private clinics you can book a dermatologist directly. Some insurance plans only pay for a specialist visit after a referral from a general practitioner, so read your policy or call your insurer before you book.
Will insurance pay for a skin treatment?
Insurance usually pays for medical problems such as eczema, psoriasis or a mole that needs checking, within the limits of your policy. It rarely pays for cosmetic treatments, which also carry 5% VAT. Ask the clinic to confirm cover with your insurer before the visit.
What should I ask a dermatologist about hair loss?
Ask how they will look for the cause, for example with blood tests or a close look at the scalp, since hair loss has many causes and not all of them need the same treatment. Ask what the options are, how long before any change can be judged and what each visit or session costs.
Should my child see a dermatologist or a paediatrician first?
For a common rash, many parents start with their paediatrician, who can refer the child on if needed. For a skin problem that keeps coming back, or a birthmark or mole that changes, look for a dermatologist who sees children regularly. The children button in each list shows them.
